API access
How to schedule social media posts with an API
Schedule social media posts with an API: create a draft, set a time, and read the queue. Compare PostTempo, Buffer, Publer, and SocialPilot.
Vendor notes checked September 22, 2026. Plan limits below are PostTempo defaults, not a promise that another vendor's page is unchanged.
Schedule one post before you compare vendors
Create a key that can draft and cannot publish. On PostTempo that means posts:write, media:write, accounts:read, and queue:read, without posts:publish. Send the draft to the posts route with the connected account and scheduledAt as an ISO datetime. Read the queue and confirm the same post is on the calendar. Only after a person approves it should a separate key send publishNow.
Free and Creator cannot do this. Pro, Agency, and Scale include API keys. Approval workflows, the human yes in the product, are on Agency and Scale only. Pro can create the scheduled draft and cannot record that approval.
Best social media scheduler with API access
The best scheduler with API access is the one whose plan, scopes, and media rules match the posts you will actually send. A listed API is not the same as permission to publish a Reel, a thread, or a video.
Judge the API by four jobs: create a post against a specific account, attach media, choose a time, and read back whether it scheduled, published, or failed. The table below links each vendor's own page.
What PostTempo's API actually covers
Paid plans that include API keys can call versioned routes for posts, media, connected accounts, queue status, analytics reads, and AI generation. Requests use a bearer API key. Keys are scoped. Creating a post requires posts:write. Publishing immediately also requires posts:publish. Reading the queue requires queue:read, and retrying a job requires queue:write.
Free and Creator do not include API keys. Pro includes two keys, Agency includes ten, and Scale does not cap the key count. Agency and Scale also include approval workflows; Pro does not. Those are the current plan defaults. Confirm them on the pricing page before you buy, because entitlements can change.
There is a webhooks:write scope on the key model, and this guide does not treat customer outbound webhooks as a documented workflow. Design around the post and queue routes you can call today.
How to keep an agent from publishing unreviewed copy
Give the automation posts:write, media:write, and accounts:read so it can prepare a draft against the right account. Leave posts:publish off that key until a person has approved the text and the media. On Agency and Scale, put the same post through the approval step in the workspace.
The posts route accepts a schedule time or an immediate publish flag. Immediate publish is a loaded action. Use it for an authorized test, not as the default for an unattended agent.

| Scheduler | API note | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| PostTempo | API keys on Pro, Agency, and Scale. Not on Free or Creator. | Confirm key counts and approval availability on the pricing page. PostTempo pricing |
| Buffer | On September 22, 2026, Buffer listed API access on Free (1 key, 3,000 requests/month), Essentials (3 keys, 7,500), and Team (5 keys, 15,000). Approvals were listed on Team. | Price it per channel. Yearly billing for one channel listed Essentials at $5/month and Team at $10/month. Buffer pricing |
| Publer | Publer's docs say the API is for Business and Enterprise customers. The help center also lists Business plans in good standing and Top Ambassadors. | Confirm the current plan name and standing rules before you depend on it. Publer API docs |
| SocialPilot | SocialPilot's plan page lists API access on Enterprise. | Do not assume a lower SocialPilot tier includes the API. SocialPilot plans |
| Sprout Social | On September 22, 2026, Sprout's pricing page listed the Sprout API on the Advanced plan at $399 per seat per month. Enterprise is custom. | Re-check seat price and whether your contract uses the Essentials publishing line instead of the suite. Sprout Social pricing |
| Later | This page does not claim Later has or lacks a public API. | Read Later's current pricing and developer notes before you treat visual planning as the only integration path. Later pricing |
Test the API before you migrate
- List the accounts, media types, and timezones the automation must support. Reject a tool that cannot publish that format even if the API exists.
- Create one draft through the API and one draft in the calendar. Both should land in the same queue.
- Read the post status after an authorized test. A 200 response that you cannot find on the calendar is not a finished integration.
- Remove posts:publish from the agent key and confirm immediate publish is rejected.
- Rotate the key and confirm the old key fails before you point a production workflow at it.
Questions
How do I schedule social media posts with an API?
Create a draft with posts:write, set scheduledAt, and read it back with queue:read. Keep posts:publish off that key until a person has approved the post. On PostTempo, API keys start on Pro. Recorded approvals start on Agency.
Does every PostTempo plan include an API?
No. Free and Creator do not include API keys. Pro, Agency, and Scale do, with different key limits.
Can an API key publish immediately?
Only if it has the posts:publish scope. A key with posts:write can prepare a post; immediate publish is a separate scope.
Which routes can a key call?
Current routes cover posts, media, connected accounts, analytics reads, queue status and retry, and AI generation. Match the key's scopes to the route.
Is API access the same as Zapier or n8n?
Zapier and n8n can call the API. They are not a substitute for it. Start from the workflow guides if that is how your team wants to connect.
Should I pick a scheduler only because an API is listed?
No. Confirm the formats, the plan that unlocks the API, how status is read back, and how a human stops a bad draft.
